The Pickel Family of South Carolina

This information is transcribed from a notebook of genealogical information
handwritten in a leather covered notebook by James Marion Pickel.

"These notes are written by James Marion Pickel, son of James Elbert Pickel, grandson of William Pickel and Elizabeth Wilson Pickel and great-grandson of Jacob Pickel, the German. Or to put it differently James Marion Pickel was the son of James Elbert Pickel who was the son of William Pickel, the latter being the son of Jacob Pickel, the German.

James Marion Pickel's mother (born Marion Welborn) was the first and only wife of J.E. Pickel. She was a daughter of Moses Welborn and Sarah (born Holbert) his wife, Moses being a son of Col. James Welborn who, the traditions of the family say, came from Wales to Virginia and thence to South Carolina soon after the Revolutionary War.

All the statements made in this book were received by me (I change from the third and write in the first person) from my father and mother mainly and from my mother's first cousin, A. F. Welborn (Albert Frank). But I also knew well and often saw and visited my father's parents and my mother's mother (my mother's father died long before my birth.)

J.M. Pickel, June 18 1899"
