Around 1915, Mrs. Bartlett took her four daughters on vacation to Mineral Wells, a natural springs west of Ft. Worth. From left to right, Theora, Theressa, Theretta and Therma.

Theretta was born and raised in Malakoff, Henderson Co., Texas. When she was about 10 years old, her eldest sister, Theora, began Baylor College for Women in Belton, Texas. Mrs. Bartlett moved to Belton with her four daughters, in order to be near Theora. When Theora eloped with John Ray Guinn in 1920, Mrs. Bartlett returned to Malakoff with the youngest daughter, Therma, and put Theretta and her older sister "Tess" in the Baylor Academy, the college preparatory school for Baylor.

This photo, taken around 1928 is one of the last taken during her college years. Due to the Stock Market Crash of 1929, she decided not to return for her senior year. Theretta remained at home in Malakoff, with her parents and younger sister, Therma, until her marriage to Robert H. Pickel in 1933.

While she only attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas for one year, Therma was active socially and pleadge Pi Beta Phi sorority.

Small town girl, but in style...
During the time she lived at home in the early 1930's Theretta and her sister Therma often made trips to Dallas for shopping. The Depression had hit her father very hard and the family was not as affluent as it had been, but Theretta managed to live a good life for a young woman of that time.
