Notes - John Franklin Mullens (1871-1948) came to Navarro County shortly before 1900. He was the son of Marcus D. and Mary (Acker) Mullens of Limestone County. Being a carpenter by trade, one would assume that he came to take part in the building boom which was going on in Kerens at that time. In any event, he stayed and built many of the buildings and homes that still stand in Kerens today.
On April 7, 1901, he and Cora Mozell (Zella) McConnico (1876-1957) were married. (See C. T. McConnico family sketch.). Their home stood directly across from where the old Methodist church was located. They were of the Baptist faith. Their children are listed below.
Ollie Dee (1900-1976) made Kerens his home all his life.
Sybil Elizabeth (Bessie) married Albert Berry (son of early Navarro County Presbyterian preacher William Berry) who died in 1948. They were Kerens residents, and their children were Billy Prince and Teddy Dee. Bill (1927-1974) married Francine May of Kerens. They lived in Kerens where he was postmaster and was well known for his contributions to the community and affable wit. Their children are Lydia, William Albert, and Daniel Bunn. Ted married Theresa Faughn of Kerens, and they now reside in Pasadena, Texas with their children Todd, Donna Laura, and Timothy. In 1958 Bessie Mullens Berry married George Arnett who died in 1965. She still lives in Kerens.
In 1930 Mary Nell married Middleton Grant Westbrook (1910-1967). (See G.M. Westbrook family sketch.). Though later living in Itasca, Texas, they lived for a number of years in Kerens. The children of this couple are Jean and Marianna. Jean married Dr. Robt. J. Gibbons, and they live in Arlington, Texas with their children Grant Westbrook and Kent Robert. Marianna married Dr. Walter R. Wilson, and they live in Rochester, Minnesota with their children Miranda, Zach, Nathaniel, and Amelia.
Included in the Mullens household and always considered as her own child was Mrs. Mullens’ niece Addie McConnico (1901-1976) who married Horace Newsom; and they made their home in Kerens. Both their children Patricia and Charles Horace grew up in Kerens. Pat married Norris Lipscomb, and they live in Ennis, Texas as do their children Lance, Kevin, and Relda. Charles Horace married Katy Kirkpatrick, and they live in Kountze, Texas with their children Charles, Cindy, Summy, and Scott.
