    • PORTER'S BLUFF, TEXAS. Porter's Bluff, also known as Taos, was a ferry crossing and shipping point on the Trinity River during the second half of the nineteenth century. Located sixteen miles northeast of Corsicana just off Farm Road 85 in extreme northeastern Navarro County, it was one of the earliest settlements in the county. It was founded by Col. Robert H. Porter, who received a tract of land on the Trinity River in recognition for his service in the Texas Revolution.qv Porter conceived of establishing a major shipping center on the river to serve area plantations. In 1848, with the assistance of John H. Reagan,qv he platted the town and named it Taos. A ferry began operating sometime later, and by the late 1850s Taos was a thriving town with a blacksmith shop, several stores, and a sawmill. The town also served as a port for small steamboats, known as packets, which before the Civil Warqv plied the Trinity, brought supplies, and transported cotton downriver. Taos continued to prosper until the early 1870s, when the Houston and Texas Central Railroad extended its line from Bryan to Corsicana. Competition from the railroad effectively brought an end to the river traffic, and the town began to decline. The ferry continued to operate until the 1880s, when it was replaced by a bridge. A post office under the name Porter's Bluff opened in 1900 but was discontinued in 1904, and by the mid-1930s the community was a ghost town. In 1990 no traces of the town remained. No population estimates were available.

    Farmer
    • There were only farmers and ranchers living around Rice until the Houston and Texas Central Railroad reached here in 1871-1872. Then Mr. Lewis B. Haynie and Rev. Jerry Ward came and established a store and post office on the corner where Loop and Walker had a store later. Soon Mr. Benjamin C. Clopton came and had the first Drug Store in Rice. He was the father of [Mrs.] J. M. Bartlett.

Among the farmers nearby in 1860 were Burwell Edmunson [Edmundson], Lucian Lockhart, Isaac B. Sessions, Egbert Sessions, Jesse M. Bartlett Sr., James and Thomas Bartlett, Wm. A. Langham, Nathan M. Fitzgerald, and Major Rose. The Log house which Mr. Langham built is still used. The Major Rose house is still standing and the framework is of cedar logs.

  • Notes
    • With his father, he served in the Army of the Republic of Texas during the 1836 Texas Revolution. His eight-year-old bag horse was 'lost in service' on 15 Jul 1836, for which he was reimbursed $125. On 10 May 1838 the Secretary of War for the Republic issued bounty warrant 3291 to him for 320 acres of land for service in the Army of the Republic from 18 Jun 1836 to 18 Sep 1836. Pursuant to the warrant he patented 320 acres in Lampasas County on 11 Sep 1845.

He and Amanda moved to present Navarro County, Texas (then part of Robertson County) in the same year, when the area was just being settled and was still somewhat the frontier. They first lived at Taos (Porter's Bluff) on the Trinity River.

In 1846 he was appointed Navarro County tax collector by his friend, Sheriff James Allen Johnson. He also served the county as justice of the peace in the 1860's and was the first postmaster of Rice, serving from 2 Oct 1872, when the post office was established, to 23 Nov 1875.

Federal census records for 1850 give his occupation as farmer and the value of his real estate as $3,000; the 1860 census shows his land holdings had increased to $4,000 and his personal estate was valued at $1,200. The family moved from near the Trinity westward to a farm three or four miles south of present Rice, building their home on a site now on the north side of Farm Road 1126, about a mile west of the railroad tracks.

He died at the home of his son J.M., probably on this same farm near Rice, on 11 Sep 1888. When his first wife, Amanda, died in 1851, at age 29, Joseph, then 37, they had four young children, the oldest then being 11. About five years later, he married Martha Ann Elizabeth Norvell, who died at age 45, when Joseph was 60. He was remembered by a niece for his gentle, polished manners, his love of books, and his careful training of his children.
