- Irving Gardniner Arnold Jr. of Farmington, went home to be with his beloved wife Sibyl early Friday morning after a short bout with cancer. Irv was born March 9, 1928, in La Mesa. During the first three years of his life, his family moved just as many times — from New Mexico to Arizona to California, then back to Rhode Island where his father was from — only to return in 1931 to New Mexico where they settled on a 160-acre homestead near Animas. In 1935, Irv's father sold the homestead to Diamond A Ranch, and moved his family to an 80-acre parcel of land near Centralia, Wash. Over the next five years, his family cleared about 40 acres of stumps, trees, and dense bush on their land. Then, in 1940, Irv's dad enlisted, at 41 years of age and was sent to the South Pacific. In 1946, just one year after his father's return from duty, Irv enlisted in the Army Air Corp in Seattle, Wash. It was in the military that Irv acquired his love for flying — something he enjoyed doing even in his later years — and learned Morse Code, which he used when working with Ham radio and was one of many hobbies. He had attained the rank of staff sergeant by the time he was discharged from Fort Dix, N.J., in 1950. Irv enjoyed learning, and his many occupations proved that. He was an air traffic controller, drove a truck, worked on radios and TVs, worked in the oil field, and while semi-retired did maintenance work. Irv lived all over the country, but he always came back to New Mexico. He also had many other interests.
For years, he was a volunteer firefighter and an avid sportsman. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, tennis, bowling, and golf (especially with his sons), as well as many other sports. He enjoyed a good game of chess, and he loved to draw and paint. At the time of his death he had drawn or painted Shiprock from nearly every angle. Irv was preceded in death by his wife, Sibyl Arnold; father, Irving Gardiner Arnold Sr.; mother, Eleanor May Arnold; brother, Chuck Arnold; and daughter-in-law, Dixie Kerr. He is survived by sisters, Norma Sparks of Las Cruces, and Hazel Howard of Arcanum, Ohio. He is also survived by son, Russ Lake and wife, Carol, of Champagne, Ill.; son, James Arnold and wife, Debbie, of Bloomfield; daughter, Lillian Arnold of Las Cruces; son, Tom Arnold and wife Carolyn of Bloomfield; daughter, Kathy Cordell and husband, Joel of Flora Vista; son, Mike Arnold and wife, Carolyn, of Bloomfield; stepsons, Pinky Kerr of Lordsburg, Brent Hammond and wife, Kathy, of Longmont, Colo.; and John Hammond of Madison, Ala. Irv had 16 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren with two more on the way. He also leaves his pride and joy behind: his teacup poodle, Koko. He was a member of an endangered species — he was a true gentleman. He will be greatly missed by those who were blessed to have know him and loved him.
