| 1360 | Forrest Hill, 47, owner and operator of the Forrest Hill Golf Course, died yesterday at the United States Veterans Hospital. A veteran of World War I, he had been a major in the army until six years ago when he was retired because of ill health. Hill who lived at 146 South Candler Street had been active in American Legion work as a member of the Harold Bird Chapter No. 66 until illness forced him to give up many activities. He was interested in golf and played until illness restricted his activities. He kept up his interest in the game through associations at the club and with others in sports circles. While in the Army, Hill graduated from the infantry school at Fort Benning and from the tank school at Fort Meade. He was a member of the Decatur Presbyterian church. He is survived by his wife, Caroline McKinney Hill, a daughter, Louise Hill, mother, Mrs. Thomas P. | 1365 | Frances Dilley Broyles, 88, was born July 16, 1918 in Palestine, Texas to Sammie Belle Campbell and Clarence Van Deursen Dilley. She is a granddaughter of the late Governor Thomas Mitchell Campbell and a direct descendent of George M. Dilley, a pioneering railroad industrialist of Texas in the 1880s. She attended Randolph Macon College for Women in Lynchburg, VA and graduated cum laude from the University of Texas in 1939 with a degree in the Bachelor of Arts. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi fraternity. In 1941, she married Gordon Barrett Broyles. As a lifelong resident of Palestine, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Meleterion Study Club, DAR, Palestine Fishing Club, and a charter member of the Harvey Woman’s Club. She took much love and interest in her family, gardening, and was an avid bridge player. Loved ones will remember her both as a gracious hostess and a lady of great spiritual strength. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gordon B.; her son, Tom Dilley Broyles; and her sisters: Jean Dilley Knowles and Janet Dilley Davenport. She is survived by her children: Gordon Barrett Broyles Jr., and wife Sunny, Lucie F. Broyles and daughter-in-law, Nancy T. Broyles, all of Palestine. Her grandchildren are: David B. Broyles, Ben T. Broyles, Sam D. Broyles and Carroll B. Gurganus, all of Dallas; Sarah F. Broyles of Boston, MA; L. Jeannette Bostick of Durham, NC; Barrett G. Bostick of Winter Haven, FL; Betsy B. Bostick of Tampa, FL; Jennifer Griffin, Linsey Whittington and great granddaughter Jacie Griffin, all of Palestine. She also is survived by her cousins, Bud Wommack of Palestine, Mitchell Wommack of Corpus Christi and Dr. William B. Campbell of Austin. Visitation will be at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 23. | 1368 | From the San Antonio Express, Oct. 2, 1916: FRIENDS OF MANY YEARS BID FAREWELL TO DAUGHTER OF TEXAS Many of the old families of San Antonio and Southwest Texas were represented yesterday afternoon at the funeral of Mrs. Mary Millett Lane, widow of the late Judge Ellsberry R. Lane. Mrs. Lane, who was born in Houston, Tex., January 22, 1842, passed away peacefully during sleep early Saturday morning at the home of her son, H. C. Lane, Millett, LaSalle County. The burial was from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. William E. Herring, 330 West Summit Avenue. Chaplain McCord, from Fort Sam Houston, read the Episcopal burial service at the home and at the grave in Anchor Lodge, Masonic Cemetery, where interment was by the side of Judge Lane. The active pallbearers were Marshall Hicks, Lane Taylor, W. B. Lupe, S. W. Kearny, J. L. Browne, C. H. Surkamp. The honorary pallbearers were Thomas H. Franklin, Yale Hicks, S. N. English, Dr. Amos Graves. Mrs. Lane's grandfather, Josiah [Jesse] Bartlett, and her father, Samuel Millett, both fought under General Sam Houston at the battle of San Jacinto. Her husband commanded a company in Riley's Regiment, Sibley's Brigade, during the Civil War. Here brothers were among the well-known Southwest Texas cattlemen. Her people had a prominent part in the shaping of the Republic and then, the State of Texas. Mrs. Lane numbered her friends not only in this city, but throughout the State by the hundreds. This was in evidence yesterday by the many who came to pay their tribute to a noble character, a brave, generous, gracious gentlewoman, by the scores of telegrams of condolence, and by the great wealth of floral tokens of love in which the casket rested. | MILLETT, Mary Bartlett (I11258)

Interment will be in the Davis Cemetery under the direction of Carroll & Lehr Funeral Home. She died Monday in Henderson County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Avant was the daughter of John and Margaret Hughes Davis, a pioneer Henderson County family. She was born Feb. 28, 1890 in the Baxter Community and had lived in the community all her life. She was a housewife and was a correspondent for the Athens Review covering the Baxter Community for many years. Mrs. Avant was active in the United Methodist Churches of Baxter and Athens and was a member of the Baxter Home Demonstration Club. Main St., retired employee of the Crane Co., will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Arbor Ward Chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1740 S. State St., by Bishop Harry Anderson. Mr. Pitts died Wednesday at 1 a.m. at his home of natural causes. For 44 years prior to his retirement in May 1950, he worked for the Crane Co. He was an active member for the past 14 years of Arbor Ward, serving at the time of his death as a ward teacher. He held the office of a seventy. He was a former member of the Jefferson Ward. Born March 16, 1885 in Salt Lake City, he was the son of Joseph B. and Eliza Evans Pitts. He married May Bowers in Nephi in 1903, the marriage later being solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. She died Dec. 2, 1935, and he later married Sadie Tripp McFarland Aug. 21, 1938. Survivors, in addition to his widow are a son, Claude Edward Pitts, Salt Lake City, 11 grandchildren; one brother, Frank E. Mrs. Gaines died Sunday morning, Jan. 11, 2009, at Greenbrier Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born Oct. 18, 1931, in Athens to Jack Holland Brown and Lillian Gertrude Pickle Brown. Mrs. Gaines had lived most of her life in Palestine and was a member of Norwood Heights Baptist Church. She was owner and operator of Beauty Land Coiffures for many years. She met her husband, Hensley Ralph Gaines Jr., in Athens, Texas in the middle of the street and they were married for 55 years. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Holland Brown and Billy Prince Brown. Mrs. Gaines is survived by her husband, Ralph Gaines Jr. of Palestine; two daughters, Kathy Link and husband Danny, and Debby Henderson and husband James Taylor; grandchildren, Doug and Kelly Link, Heather Maples, Haley Wheeler, and Heath Henderson; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Avant died at this home Monday at 8:30 p.m. after suffering a stole Monday morning while working on his farm. Born March 6, 1888, Mr. Avant had lived in Baxter the greater part of his life. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Avant of Baxter. Mr. Avant worked several years for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Jacksonville. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Baxter, having joined when a young man. | 1376 | Gainesville, GA, October 30 – Rites were held Wednesday at Oak Grove Baptist Church, near here, for IVERSON DANIEL HUDGINS, 78, teacher, religious leader, and noted horticulturist and propagator, with Rev. Homer Morris officiating, and burial was in the churchyard. Mr. Hudgins died Sunday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Sheffield, in Rootstown, Ohio, after a long illness. Born in Hall County, he was a son of the late I. D. and Emma Jane Hudgins, well-known couple, whose families were linked with the early history of the county. Mr. Hudgins taught school in this section for almost 20 years, was a Sabbath school superintendent, deacon and church clerk, and adult leader, his active association with the Baptist church extending over a period of 60 years. He was best known, however, for his work as a horticulturist and propagator, some of his discoveries eliciting national acclaim. In the field of civil engineering and landscape designing his work called him into many fields. While engaged in this work at Decatur, he also served as superintendent of the orphan's home at that place. At various times he also filled the position of superintendent of the Atlanta Floral Company in that city, and the Blue Ridge Park Nurseries in Gainesville. In addition to his daughter, he is survived by Hubert Oscar Hudgins of Atlanta; 4 sisters, Mrs. Ellen Stewart of Norwood, Mrs. Addie Brooks of Ben Hill, Mrs. M. J. Genevieve and her husband, BJ Bryant, were owners of Camper City. She was an active member of John Wesley Methodist Church and a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed family camping trips and gambling trips with family and friends. She leaves behind her children, Billie Migl, Sharon Horadam and Luther and Marvin W. Bryant all of Victoria; sister, Beth Mayo of Seguin; grandchildren, Katy Pesek and husband Colter, and Brittany Migl; and her loving poodle, Princess. Genevieve was preceded in death by parents and her loving husband of 61 years, Billy Joe Bryant. The family will receive guests from 9 to 10 am on Monday, July 18, 2016 at John Wesley Methodist Church followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. George and Isabella had 6 children: Harry S., Nellie, Elizabeth, Arthur, Rachel and Mary Jane. George Allen Bartlett married Henrietta "Hettie" Naftel on May 27, 1875 in Macon Co., IL. George and Hettie had 3 children: Margaret, Henrietta Gertrude "Hettie" and Allen A. George Allen Bartlett married Jennie Jane Bastion (Seass) on Dec. 13, 1883 in Moultrie Co., IL. They had no children, but Jennie had a son from a previous marriage, Herbert H. Seass. The death of G. A. Bartlett occurred at 10 o'clock this (Wednesday) forenoon at the residence on South Water street, resulting from kidney trouble. The deceased was engaged with William Fierce in the feed and wagon yard business at A. Culp's old place. He was taken sick last spring. His age was 55 years. He was married three times, but all of his wives are dead and buried in the Long Grove cemetery in Macon township, where the body of the husband will be laid at rest. Eight children survive. The deceased was a Mason and in good circumstances. He owned a fine farm of 176 acres in Kansas and property in this county. | 1393 | Gerald O. McClung, 89, of Corsicana passed away Sunday, April 1, 2001 in Corsicana. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Edward A. Baggett officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gary Brown, Leonard Fuller, Les Leskoven, Frank Murchison, Abe Stroud and Susan Wells. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Charles Brown, John Forster, Dennis Smart and Pete Walton. Mr. McClung was born April 12, 1911 in Corsicana to Dr. and Mrs. John Edward McClung. His grandfather, Thomas Cyrus White, was the first white child born in Navarro County and Mr. McClung's great-grandfather, R.N. White, was the first county clerk of Navarro County as well as Corsicana's first postmaster. Mr. McClung attended both Baylor University and the University of Texas studying electrical engineering. On June 20, 1937 he married Elizabeth Park. In 1934, he completed his first solo flight and later became one of the civilian flight instructors at the Corsicana Air Field. Several items belonging to him are now on display at the museum at the Corsicana Municipal Airport. Following the war, he worked for the Bethlehem Steel engineering department in both Corsicana and Tulsa, Okla. Returning to Corsicana in 1951, he was involved in farming until his retirement in the early 1970s. He was an avid fisherman and loved to raise flowers and plants. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
