4701 R.N. White is another name found on a number of early Navarro County documents. For a number of years, Mr. White served as the county clerk for Navarro County. Here again was another person who bought land as an investment rather than to cultivate any acreage. Mr. White’s house was located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and North Main where the law offices of Dawson and Sodd are located. Back in the early days of Corsicana, the avenue known as Fifth Avenue was called White Street in honor of Mr. White. R.N. White told the census taker he had 15 acres of improved land and 4,985 acres of unimproved land for a grand total of 5,000 acres. He was very conservative when he valued his land at $2 per acre. WHITE, Robert Newton (I2811)

Rachel had one sister, Priscilla (Tib) Scarborough. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Bay Evans Rampy Komar and husband Ty Rampy. Rachel is survived by her son, Ty C. Rampy and wife Linda Leming Rampy; sister, Tib Scarborough, three grandchildren, Cole Evans Komar, of Round Top, Texas, Ty Evans Rampy and Madison Sutton Rampy, both of Calvert, Texas. 4703 Ralph Dyer Pine passed from this life on Thursday, the 30th of April 2009, and into the waiting arms of his beloved wife Maurine Lively Pine who preceded him in death on the 21st of November 2008. Husband, father, grandfather, printer by trade, fisherman, photographer, gardener, sports enthusiast, memorabilia collector are many of the roles he played and the activities he most enjoyed throughout his lifetime. Born on the 18th of May 1920, in Alma, Arkansas to Alexander George Pine and Fannie Reed Dyer he was the 3rd of 4 children. He grew up alongside an older brother named Houston, a sister Alleyne Mitchell, whom have preceded him in death and his dearly missed and beloved younger brother Edgar who proudly served during WWII and died for his country while in France where he is buried in the town of St. Avold in the Lorriane Military Cemetery. Ralph's mother was a homemaker and his father a railroad worker who worked long hours and endured many hardships traveling to rural areas to find work while Fannie stayed at home and raised the children. Ralph's dear Grandfather and Grandmother lived with the family and played an intricate role in raising the children. Ralph was a true survivor and fighter evident in his final days and hours here on Earth as well as during his childhood battle with polio. The family moved to Galveston, Texas in his early youth where he endured a successful operation to walk without crutches. It was there he attended and graduated from Ball High School. Shortly after in 1941 is when he met his sweetheart Maurine Lively on a double date and they later married on the 23rd of December 1942. Ralph worked with the Army Corp of Engineers during the war, and then moved on to work with Addressograph Multigraph in Galveston where he grew to learn and love the trade of printing. Impressive enough to learn and operate these massive machines, he and Maurine later moved to Houston where he ventured out and formed his own business, Ralph Pine Printing and Letter Service, in the Bank of the Southwest Building in downtown Houston. It operated for nearly 20 years in the same location. One of his many passions was fishing West Bay in Galveston for trout and red fish. He religiously spent hours in his garage dedicated to organizing his fishing reels and rods preparing for his next outing. His love of working in his garden was evident by the massive tomato plants, caladiums and sweet pea flowers. His garden was truly a showcase that all admired. He made over 25 trips to Indianapolis, attending the Indy 500 race each May, and compiled a memorabilia collection of his travels there. Ralph's hobby of photography and film making has captured a lifetime of fond memories and occasions, truly the families treasured gifts that will be passed down through generations to come. Although challenged by polio as a young boy, a favorite pastime was bicycling and exercising in the neighborhood of Glenbrook Valley in Southeast Houston. This is where he and Maurine raised their 4 children, Sheridan Ann, Melinda Maurine, Muriel Alleyne and Melissa Ruth. Rarely a weekday passed that he wasn't dressed and prepared to help Maurine by taking his girls to school every morning before work. Time was taken to help with their homework and on weekends he would help in the kitchen and give Maurine a small break from her duties as Mother. A fond memory during the summer of the mid 60's was the day the Beatles visited Houston. That very same morning a client gave him 5 tickets to the concert and Ralph took off work to take his girls. They will always remember this special time in history. He and Maurine together endured the ups and downs of raising 4 girls. All the while in their hearts they truly held the best intentions, desires, hopes and dreams for their girls. Known as Daddy to his daughters, as Papa to his grandchildren and as an avid story teller and cut-up to his closest friends and family. He is survived by daughter Sheridan Williams, her husband John Eddie Williams, daughter Kristen Clark Nix and son-in-law Lee Stover Nix, daughter Lauren Leigh Clark and the daughters paternal father Bill Clark, daughter Melinda Smith, and her husband Ronnie Smith, and their daughters Alana Smith and April Smith, daughter Muriel Boulware and husband John Boulware, daughter Melissa Zarikian Collins and her husband Danny Collins, children Andrea Zarikian and Charlie Zarikian and their paternal father Carlos Zarikian, and caregivers Virginia Hall and Nellie Dyer and caring, dedicated housekeeper Juana Hernandez. He is also survived by his wife Maurine's loving family members, his brother -in -law Charles Lively, and sister -in- laws Geneva Pickle and Margaret Teel. Ralph was a devout Christian and attended the Church of Christ. We will miss him for all the days of our lives. PINE, Ralph Dyer (I12381)

Postscript - That Mysterious Middle "L"

A final mystery remains about Col. John L. Haynes. There are at least four separate conflicting possibilities for his middle name! The first record of his name, in his mother's bible, (and in that of his Uncle David Street), has his birth name as simply John Haynes, with no middle name or initial. This despite that several of his siblings did have middle names in that bible record-- his older brothers were cited as William Scott Haynes, and Malcolm Decater Haynes; and his younger brother as James Marion Haynes. It is likely that young John adopted a middle initial or name later in life. His military and federal records, and his tombstone all refer to him simply as Col. John L. Haynes.

It is important to note that Col. Haynes had an uncle on his mother's side named Lennaeus Scott, after the Swedish botanist whose classic work classified the plant and animal kingdom. Lennaeus developed the binomial system of nomenclature, e.g., homo sapiens, which work laid the foundation for Darwin's theories of evolution. His son, Dr. Henry Malcolm Haynes named his only child John Lenneis Haynes, and the family always assumed that he was John Lenneis Haynes the 2nd, named after his grandfather, in turn named for his mother's brother. The author of this text, the great-grandson of the Col., was named John Lenneis Haynes the 3rd, and named his son John Lenneis the 4th.

However, Sam Houston, a close friend of the Colonel, referred to him as John Leal Haynes in his official writings. A stained glass window in St. David's church in Austin, commissioned by his daughter Mary Van Buren, calls him John Lengon Haynes. And the living descendants in Laredo have always assumed the Col. was named John Leonard Haynes, since he named his third son Leonard. It may be that he changed the name as the situation suited him--we may never know.

4730 Research on Catherine Berry Pickle
Brief of Research by Kathi Wilcox
Provided 2/5/2002

Catherine was born about 1785. It is not known where. We know she died after the 1870 because she is listed in the 1870 census as 84 years of age. We have a document of her marriage to Jacob Pickle is misspelled on the documents as Jacob (Tickle) Date of marriage is 2 Feb. 1802. Jacob purchased land in At tala County, Mississippi. The concensus is they are both
thought to have lived out their lives and were buried there.

Fact #1. Catherine is listed on the Family Group Sheet left by my grandfather, James Napoleon Pickle, as Catherine Berry.

Fact #2. Documentation: Orange County Marriage Bonds. Several different copies of the marriage. Catherine Berry marries Jacob Tickle: (misspelled for Pickle) with his mark, indicating that he was unable to read or write, or the person recording did not hear correctly. Another possibility of the mistake may have been in transcribing the document, a "T" may have been mistaken for a "P". At any rate the marriage date is one year prior to the birth of their
first child, Mary in 1803. The bondsman for the marriage is Jacob Waggoner. The Waggoner Family members keep showing up on documents with the Pickle's and other people believed to be living with this group of settlers. Robert Pickle, first son of Jacob & Catherine, marries Sarah Aldridge. Sarah's mother is Judith (Waggoner) Aldridge.

F: Jacob Pickle Mar: 20 Feb 1802
M: Catherine Berry Bondsmen: Jacob Waggenor
S: Robert Pickle

F: Peter Aldridge Mar: 21 Sept 1824
M: Judith Waggoner Bondsmen: Robert Berry
D: Sarah Aldridge

Fact # 3 The naming of Jacob and Catherine's children. This couple named their first daughter ,
Mary I think this is the name of Catherine's mother. The couple name their first son, Robert
and the next son Henry. The male names are thought to be the names of both fathers of this
couple.

Fact #4 In researching the area of Orange County, N.C. during the period between the birth of
Catherine and her marriage in 1802, we find several Berry families. We have located three
Robert Berry's listed as follows:

Robert Berry who married Elizabeth Cates. This Robert is thought to be known as Robert Berry Sr. as indicated in some of the documents.

Robert Berry who married Sally Cates 12 Aug 1799. Marriage date eliminates this couple. Unless, this is a second marriage for Robert.

Robert Berry who married Mary Kemp. This Robert is thought to be known as Robert Berry Jr, as shown in some of the documents. Mary is listed as deceased in 1814 Will of Robert Berry Sr .

Fact #5 Family Group Sheet for Robert Berry Sr. married to Elizabeth Cates.

Fact #6 Robert Berry is bondsman for the marriage of Peter Aldridge and Judith Waggoner. 4 Feb 1786

Fact #7 Robert Berry Sr.'s Will dated 16 Apri11812, proved Augusta Court 1814, lists a Robert Berry as a son, possibly Robert Berry Jr. Father to Catherine.

Fact #8 Orange County Taxpayers Lists both Robert Berry Sr 1785 to 1792 & Robert Berry Jr 1786 to 1792, as tax payers in the Orange County.

Fact # 9 The 1800 Census Catherine would have been 15 to 16 years old in 1800. The 1800 census list six different Berry families in the area at that time. William, Thomas, Robert Sr., Robert Jr., Joshua, and
David. The only females in this group at the appropriate age would be in the Robert Berry Jr Family. He has one in the 10-16 and one in the 16-26. Catherine would have been the oldest or next to the oldest with seven other siblings.

Fact #10 Picture identified with Berry name. Included in a trunk passed down to myself Kathi Pickle Wilcox, from my grandfather to my aunt, and then to me is a tin type picture, identified with the following statement. "Jacob Pickle G. Grandfather of James Napoleon Pickle with wife Catherine Berry"
Conclusion: I feel the evidence strongly points to Catherine being a Berry. Women at this time
were not listed in documents as much as the men and it is rare when we can identify women
within this time period. The most convincing evidence for me, comes from my grandfather
who identified her in his research as Catherine Berry. From that information I have located
other documents which could or could not pertain to her actual family but are great possibilities.
My next step in the research is to contact people with knowledge of the Berry lines and see if
we can find the pieces of the puzzle, linking these people and actually identifying Catherine
with her family.

4738 Rev. Robert King Obituary - January 9, 1879 - Anderson Intelligencer
This aged and excellent Christian minister, whose death it was our sad duty to chronicle last week, was one of the early Baptist ministers of this portion of South Carolina, and as such was well known in this portion of the State, not only to his own denomination, but to the people generally. He was born in the County on the 1st day of January, 1791, and upon reaching early manhood determined to try his fortunes in a new county, and accordingly removed to the State of Tennessee, where he was converted to Christianity in 1809, and baptized as a member of the Baptist faith by Rev. Daniel White of that State. He thereupon returned to this County, married in April 1811, and permanently settled here, joining the Neal's Creek Baptist Church. In May, 1828, he was ordained by his Church to preach the Gospel, the presbytery consisting of Elders Moses Holland, Sanford Vandiver and James Burris, together with Mr. Aaron Wilhoht, a lay member. He raised a family of twelve sons and daughters, all of whom are members of the Church of the same faith as their father, and are upright and exemplary men and women, making useful and respected citizens in the various walks of life in which they are engaged. Mr. King was in the ministry near fifty-one years, preaching his last sermon at Belton in March 1878. He was then very feeble, and his patriarchal words from the text, "stand still and see the salvation of the Lord," were listened to with much interest and reverence. As has already been said, he died on the 1st day of January, 1879, being on that day eighty-eight years old. Mr. King was a kind and amiable gentleman, without a college education, but possessed of strong mental power and sound judgment. He was a pure man and an earnest minister, whose long life has been devoted to the effort to benefit mankind. On last Thursday the remains of the deceased were interred in Neal's Creek Church Yard, in the presence of a large concourse of people, after eloquent and solemn funeral services by Revs. J. S. Murray and W. P. Martin.

4739 RICE, Texas, Jan. 28.--Burwell Edmundson, oldest citizen of Rice and believed to be the oldest native Texan, observed his ninety-eighth birthday at his home in Rice Saturday. Better known as Uncle Burl, he was born near Huntsville. In 1854 he moved with his parents to Chatfield, Navarro County, then to Waxahachie in 1856, from there to Waco and later back to Chatfield.

In 1862 he enlisted in Waul's Legion of the Confederate army at Tehuacana, in Limestone County, and was transferred from there to Mississippi.

Benjamin F. Sterling, father of former Gov. Ross Sterling of Texas, was his commander during the Battle of Vicksburg. It required forty-eight days during 1863 for this legion to be captured by General Grant's army.

After being paroled at Vicksburg on July 10, Mr. Edmundson walked from there to his home at Chatfield, a distance of more than 400 miles.

He received his discharge at Galveston in 1865.

For several years after the war he was a cowboy, assisting in moving large herds of cattle hundreds of miles.

He was married at Chatfield in 1869 to Miss Jane Hays. In 1871 they moved to Oak Grove community in Ellis County, then in 1896 to his present home in Rice. Mrs. Edmundson died in 1927.

Despite his advanced years, Mr. Edmundson still enjoys average health. He has been a subscriber of The Dallas News for many years.
